The year is 1959, and the watch market is increasingly competitive. In response, Certina sets out to create a unique market niche based on a concept defined by quality. The engineering and tech teams develop the idea of a specially mounted movement, "suspended" inside a highly reinforced case. They give a name to their concept: DS, which stands for "Double Security".

The objective is to prevent damage to the watch by increasing its ability to withstand shocks: the new DS watches remain intact even after a fall from 6 meters. The new system also raises the level of water resistance to 20 atmospheres (ATM), which places Certina at the forefront of the industry.

This remarkable increase in shock- and water resistance is the result of an innovative combination of seals, gaskets and robust materials, engineered to perfection by Certina's experts. The robust construction applies to all parts of the watch: a system of seals including those on the setting stem and crown, and a reinforced case back.

From its beginnings in 1959 to the present, the Double Security (DS) Concept has kept pace with improvements in materials and technology, and today forms an integral part of every Certina timepiece.
