Certina is heading for the starting line at this year's Tour de Turtles – the Sea Turtle Conservancy's annual "migration marathon" – in two distinct roles. As partner, the brand has supported the non-profit organisation since 2017 in its efforts to protect sea turtles. And the Swiss watchmaker will be following one participant in the Tour de Turtles very closely this year – as proud sponsor of the female leatherback it has named "Certina".
The Florida-based Sea Turtle Conservancy (STC) is the world's oldest organisation working to protect sea turtles, and is the founder of the so-called "Tour de Turtles". This "migration marathon" makes use of satellite technology to allow members of the public to follow the race online and in real time (www.tourdeturtles.org), as the tagged sea turtles leave their nesting beaches in search of food, travelling hundreds of miles in the process. The Tour de Turtles is the heart of an educational program designed to make people aware of the numerous threats these creatures face.
Certina is only too happy to support this cause. The brand with the turtle shell in its logo has made a name for itself in the past in connection with high-profile underwater projects. Since 1959 – the year the Sea Turtle Conservancy was founded – Certina's DS Concept has assured exceptionally robust resistance. Nothing can easily overcome the resistance of timepieces under the sign of the turtle. To ensure that their cousins in the animal kingdom continue to live to a ripe old age, in 2017 the brand formed a partnership with the Sea Turtle Conservancy. And at this year's Tour de Turtles, which runs from 1 August to 31 October 2018, Certina has it very own turtle in the race.
For almost 60 years now the Sea Turtle Conservancy has been working to ensure the survival of sea turtles and their habitats. Through its activities the organisation has contributed to the restoration of significant sea turtle populations – in particular in the Caribbean, and in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. Certina is proud to be a part of this committed conservancy effort. As a tribute to the STC's cause, in 2018 the brand launched a special model that takes up STC's colours and logo: a portion of the proceeds from the sale of each DS Action Diver Special Edition (Sea Turtle Conservancy) goes directly to the organisation.
